IPC · 2024 International Plumbing Code

§608 · Cross-connection / backflow

Effective in IPC 2024.

Plain-English explainer

608 is the cross-connection / backflow control rule: potable supply lines are protected at the service entrance and at fixtures where a contamination hazard exists, with hose bibbs, irrigation lines, boiler make-up lines, and similar connections all carrying an approved backflow device. The drafter cites it for any permit that adds a hose bib, an irrigation branch, or a boiler feed.

Why inspectors flag this

A hose bibb, an irrigation branch, or a boiler make-up line without the listed backflow device is the canonical 608 red-tag; the drafter lifts the rule so the spec lists the right assembly before the rough-in.

As quoted in the code: Potable supply lines are protected against cross-connection and backflow with approved assemblies at the service entrance and at fixtures where a contamination hazard exists; hose bibbs, irrigation lines, boiler make-up lines, and similar connections all carry an approved backflow device.
