IPC · 2024 International Plumbing Code

§305.1 · Protection of piping

Effective in IPC 2024.

Plain-English explainer

305.1 says piping in the ground is bedded and backfilled with approved material, sleeved where it passes through structural elements, and supported at the intervals the listing or manufacturer requires so the pipe is not damaged by soil load, movement, or freezing. The drafter cites it for any permit that buries a building drain, a water service, or a storm line.

Why inspectors flag this

A building drain laid on rubble, or a water service run through a footing without a sleeve, is the typical 305.1 red-tag; the drafter lifts the rule so the trench prep matches the listing before the inspector walks the rough-in.

As quoted in the code: Piping in the ground is bedded and backfilled with approved material, sleeved where it passes through structural elements, and supported at the intervals the listing or the manufacturer requires so the pipe is not damaged by soil load, movement, or freezing.
