IMC · 2021 International Mechanical Code
§504.6 · Duct termination
Effective in IMC 2021 · IMC 2024 SE Wisconsin · IMC 2024 NW Indiana.
Plain-English explainer
504.6 (Table 504.6) sets the clearance from a duct termination to the property line, openings, and walkways — dryer vents need ≥3 ft to openings and ≥10 ft to a forced-air inlet. The drafter cites it whenever a permit references a dryer vent, bath fan, or HRV termination.
Why inspectors flag this
Inspectors walk the site with a tape measure for 504.6; the drafter lifts the clearance rule so the rough-in matches before the inspector walks the lot.
As quoted in the code: Terminations clear the property line, openings, and walkways by the distances in Table 504.6; a dryer vent, for example, needs at least three feet to openings and ten feet to a forced-air inlet.
